Erntedank is mostly celebrated as a religious holiday today, although its roots come from Pagan traditions. Long before the first Europeans arrived in North America, farmers across Europe held celebrations at harvest time. These rural-based celebrations were held to give thanks for their good fortune.

Erntekkrone, Harvest Crown, is a wreath built up on a pole. The base would naturally be wheat, but it would then be decorated with ribbon and paper flowers (sort of similar to a Maypole). The Erntekrone would be hung in a prominent place at the home of the family hosting the Harvest celebrations.
