Are British Gas taking on new customers?
We’re starting all customers’ new British Gas accounts on a cash/cheque basis so we can get you up-and-running quickly. We’re working hard to make your move back to Direct Debit but this process can take around six weeks. When it’s done, we’ll let you know and provide you with details of your new monthly payments.

Does British Gas do credit checks?
If you’re changing your meter to credit, we’ll need to perform a credit check to make sure you’re eligible. For us to successfully run a credit check, you need to be an account holder, over 18 and have no outstanding debt on the meter. This means you shouldn’t have had more than £50 debt in the last 12 months.
Who is entitled to a grant for a new boiler?

Why are energy suppliers not taking new customers?
Taking on new customers means a provider has to buy more wholesale energy to supply to them. There are fears that this could lead to losses for businesses if customers are protected by the energy price cap while their supplier has to deal with ever-rising costs.

Is British Gas pay as you go more expensive?
Is it more expensive to have a Pay As You Go meter? Pay As You Go meters are only compatible with certain tariffs. So, if you’re already on one of these tariffs, then the price you currently pay won’t change.
