Is btrfs dead?
It has now been nearly eight years since the “experimental” tag was removed, but many of btrfs’ age-old problems remain unaddressed and effectively unchanged. So, we’ll repeat this once more: as a single-disk filesystem, btrfs has been stable and for the most part performant for years.

Is btrfs deprecated?
The Btrfs file system was introduced as Technology Preview with the initial release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. As of versions 6.6 and 7.4 this technology has been deprecated.
Does CentOS 8 support btrfs?
CentOS 7 did support native btrfs as a custom option in the OS installer (as a “technology preview”), but this was removed from the CentOS 8 installer, so it won’t be conered here. CentOS 8 is used for all examples presented; CentOS 7 users should likely prefer the UEK.

Is Btrfs slower than ext4?
It is to be noted that Btrfs is often a bit slower than Ext4 but the bulk of modern functionalities which it provides still makes it the preferred File System for modern desktop users.
What happened Btrfs?
Red Hat will not be moving Btrfs to a fully supported feature and it will be removed in a future major release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The Btrfs file system did receive numerous updates from the upstream in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 and will remain available in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 series.
