What are GnRH analogs used for?
The GnRH analogues all require parenteral (subcutaneous or intramuscular) administration and are used largely as androgen deprivation therapy for advanced prostate cancer. They are used off-label for precocious puberty, gender dysphoria and infertility.
What drugs are GnRH analogues?
GnRH agonists (sold under the brand names Lupron, Zoladex, Trelstar, Viadur, Vantas, Eligard and Synarel – see Table below) are drugs that lower male hormones, which has the effect of shrinking prostate tumors or slowing the growth of prostate cancer. This therapy is known as Androgen Deprivation Therapy or ADT.
How does the suprelorin implant work?
How does Suprelorin work? The active substance in Suprelorin, deslorelin, acts like the natural hormone gonadotropin- releasing hormone (GnRH) which controls the secretion of other hormones involved in fertility. Suprelorin is given as an implant that slowly releases a continuous low dose of deslorelin.
Is GnRH agonist a contraceptive?
Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHAs) were investigated as contraceptive agents from the late 1970’s to the mid-1980’s. They were abandoned as they appeared to offer no advantage over conventional combination-type oral contraceptives (COCs). This conclusion appears to be incorrect.

How long does the suprelorin implant last?
6 months
The implant lasts for at least six month, therefore to avoid any lapse in efficacy, it is recommended to place a new implant every 6 months. Suprelorin® comes in a box of two implants, each one preloaded in its own sterile single use implanting device.
How much does suprelorin implant cost?
As of 01-Jan-2021, the 4.7mg formulation costs $35/implant and the 9.4mg formulation costs $65/implant. All other facilities interested in using Suprelorin can contact the RMC for important information about the product, but we do not distribute implants to non-AZA institutions or individuals.
How long can you take GnRH analogues?
Currently, GnRH analogues are not licensed for use beyond 6 months. This is because of concerns around thinning of the bones. Under certain circumstances, a Consultant Gynaecologist can sometimes agree to a more prolonged course of treatment (up to 12 months or more).
