What is mild dyskaryosis and HPV?

What is mild dyskaryosis and HPV?

When your cervical screening test is HPV positive and shows abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix this is called ‘dyskaryosis’. Most abnormal results show minor cell changes. These are called borderline, mild or low-grade dyskaryosis. These cell changes are often linked to the HPV.

How is mild dyskaryosis treated?

Usually, no treatment is required for an abnormal smear showing only mild dyskaryosis. However, a repeat smear test after six months is necessary to monitor changes.

What does a mildly abnormal Pap smear mean?

Most often, the abnormal test result means there have been cell changes caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). That’s the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI), and can be linked to cervical cancer. Changes to your cervical cells caused by HPV can be mild, moderate, or severe.

Is dyskaryosis an STD?

Dyskaryosis can be caused through infection with human papilloma virus (HPV), which exists in a number of different strains; type 16 and type 18 cause dyskaryosis more frequently and readily than do other types. These viruses are nearly always sexually transmitted.

Should I be worried about low grade dyskaryosis?

Mild (low-grade) dyskaryosis is associated with the grade CIN 1. These changes are not cancer, and in most cases do not lead to cancer in the future. We are starting to introduce HPV testing of cervical screening samples that show borderline changes or mild (low-grade) dyskaryosis.

How long does dyskaryosis take to develop?

Abnormal smears can be mild, moderate or severe. Medical term used for describing an abnormal smear is dyskaryosis. Even when the smear shows severe dyskaryosis, it usually occurs 5-10 years before cervical cancer. Borderline grade is between normal and mild, so it means almost normal but not quite.

Can HPV go away?

In most cases (9 out of 10), HPV goes away on its own within two years without health problems. But when HPV does not go away, it can cause health problems like genital warts and cancer. Genital warts usually appear as a small bump or group of bumps in the genital area.
